“Lyrical” Love: Paul Cafcae’s Minimalist Masterpiece

“Lyrical”, Paul Cafcae’s latest single release is in stark contrast to his previous records that were high on energy. Cafcae has always been known to have penned down some bold lyrics and does not shy away from switching genres but dives straight into ballad territory with “Lyrical” as the elusive seventh blend. For the first time, there is a fourth American single released from the Washington-based musician’s album where even though the artist adopts a more pleasant approach, he sustains his disconnecting attitude, which is buffered by gentle lies of stories.

The song opens with a fingerpicking slowly, expanding a sonorous breezy spark to the surroundings. His other single, “You Cannot Get to Heaven”, has a more aggressive edge thanks to its punk undertone, but this track is centered on emotion, showcasing Cafcae’s voice. His voice is filled with desire and determination at the same time and goes quite well with the sparse arrangement of instruments. Soft and, at times, rhythmic percussive-like instruments build an undercurrent for the poignant lyrics without overpowering its context. At its core, “Lyrical” is a love song, but it’s much more than that. We are introduced to a world built by the victory of love and truthfulness over materialism, while lines such as “Let’s make paradise in a cottage with love, and leave the palace and the castle for liars” can explain the artist’s feelings towards the society, where he advises listeners to rejoice in the ordinary and honest. It is only an anthem that says “All the same, I am coming to take you away”, but this is also an affectionate promise and a challenge to social order.

Cafcae’s (singer, songwriter) track”s recording & mixing were done by Andy Dmytryshyn, mastering was done by Jamie King, while in terms of and production, adds to the song the way Dmytryshyn did nothing threatens his vocals or lyrics. With “Lyrical,” Paul Cafcae proves that rebellion doesn’t always need a loud voice; sometimes, it’s the quiet songs that carry the most power. It is an emotionally torn ballad, which is worth listening to.
