‘Animal Magnifique!’ by Calista Garcia is emotional and powerful. It is honest, raw, and well thought out. Calista’s ten-song album is a combination of glam rock, soft strings, and personal lyrics. The lyrics and songs give an overwhelming feeling, and it is both an epic and a personal album. “Tilt-a-Whirl”, the opening song on ‘Animal Magnifique!’, is fast-paced and exhilarating. Following the first track is “Animal Magnifique!”, the title track. Bold and brash, Calista sounds confident and sure of herself. The backing strings also help to add power. “Entertaining Children” and “During Wartime” are melodramatic and feel weighty but authentic.
“Big Mouth”, on the other hand, is a playful and energetic anthem about negative self-talk we have all experienced at some point. It is catchy and clever. “Ghost”, as the name implies, is a track that softens the tone of the album. Emotional and gentle, the tone of the piece and one can hear the aching and beauty in her voice. “Spookshow” continues this sombre tone with a darker and more melancholic feel, as if you are having a private moment with your thoughts. The next track, “Carnival”, is a jarring and emotional track that is passionate and angst-ridden but also liberating.
“Clara de Lune” is a softer, more melancholy piece that features a lovely violin that elevates the song. It is, by far, the most vulnerable and moving part of the album. “Love Vigilante” is a song about love and responsibility. It is contemplative and easily accessible. The album ends with “Coney Island”, the closing credits of a good film –sweet, bittersweet, and a montage of memories and emotions. The album is a complex combination of Calista as a whole. Every track is authentic and heartfelt, and ‘Animal Magnifique!’ isn’t a work of music but of an individual, a human.
