Wilhelm’s third album, ‘Wake Me in the Sunrise’, is a gentle dive into memories, emotions, and simplicity. It was recorded in a 4 track Tascam multitracker, giving the album a lo-fi aesthetic that complements the album’s unevenness perfectly. Each track is captivatingly gentle, inviting the audience into the inner sanctum of the artist.

The first track, “Midnight Caller on the Moon”, sets the mood magnificently with soft yet sorrowful vocals and a reed organ while feeling as if receiving a phone call in the middle of the night. Following this, “Obituary Page” is beautiful, yet chilling in reflecting on loss and how it comes to pass, capturing the essence of the heart flawlessly. “All The Things I Need to Say” feels like a confession paired with delicate strums on the guitar, giving the feeling of openness together with sadness. Side A concludes with “Cloudless Wonder Eyes” which has a dreamy yet bitter feeling paired with nostalgia for the moments which have been both imagined and lived.

“One To Keep You Warm” serves as the first track in Side B, and it is full of soothing lyrics set in relaxing tones. “Hopeless Drifting Afternoon” is so vivid that it can easily set up feelings of yearning as well as isolation. In contrast, “Prophet’s Gun” introduces a darker tone to the album, with sharp and deeply reflective lyrics. The last piece of the album is “Hold Your Head Now, Baby”, which is forlorn at first glance but gently propels the listener towards a feeling of motivation paired with hope. ‘Wake Me in the Sunrise’ is an exemplary piece of lo-fi folk, demonstrating how genuinely powerful storytelling can be through simplicity. As a whole, this album is unforgettable, all thanks to Wilhem’s power over raw emotion.
