GLEET’s ’24’ serves as both an album and an artistic statement as it deeply explores a single 24-hour day through each track, adding life to the complexities of existence on Earth. This specific arrangement allows the album to shift far more fluidly between themes and moods, as each song corresponds to the hour of the day which is mapped on the circle of fifths. With a smug narrator, “Robust Portfolio” perfectly sets the tone of the rest of the album, as it captures the reality of wealth disparity. Following that, “The Chain” builds on this with haunting instrumentation that mirrors oppressive systems, while “The Monitors” and “The Road” showcase a jaguar fearing the destruction of its environment. From the latter, we begin to hear a broader perspective focusing on environmental concerns.
“Submerged” not only returns the jaguar’s narrative but offers a more deep emotional narrative told from the perspective of a drowning refugee. The sparse, melancholic arrangement enhances the raw and immersive vulnerability of the story. In contrast to this, “Playtime” attempts to capture child labor through a grim yet upbeat rhythm and darkly ironic tone. “Wake Up”, the fourth track of the album is a rather energetic and danceable one. It is, however, a prelude that ushers the listener into the saga of “The Bombs Keep Failing”, which is an unapologetic anti-war song. “Seeds of Greed” and “Mekong” are exploitative cross-boundary environmental degradation that mocks the listener, very disturbing and confrontational stuff indeed.
Also, with time, tracks like “Confuse the Algorithm” and “B Grade Dystopia” critiques modern technology and consumer culture. The final pondering hours of life are provided in the last two tracks, “The Corpse” and “Bacterial”, where they eloquently portray the thoughts on death and nature that continue to thrive amongst the cursed touch of modern civilization. With all the overflowing disturbances from progress, ’24’ has nothing but lyrical beauty and social subjects combined with multi-layered instrumentation, making it ambitious and trying for GLEET’s sound as raw and deeply resonant.
