Cali Tucker has just released a single titled “Last Name” that went live on the 18th of July. It is a stripped down, straight forward, cut-to-the-chase track in which she bares her soul. There is no crutch of hype beats or overproduction here. It is her voice that makes or breaks this song, and with the first vocal hit, you know it’s real. You know she has lived this and it is about time someone stood up and sang about it. Cali does not shy away from this track. She doesn’t sing about how she has the privilege of that last name. Oh no, she inverts that notion and lays bare the vulnerability of putting yourself out there, of walking alone and having to prove you’re a success story on your own.
Her lyrics cut close to the bone but they are so personal and heartfelt. She has co-written the song with Derek Robertson, Tricia Battani, and Grammy-nominated G’harah “PK” Degeddingseze. It hits all of those things that we all have in common. The hidden scars of having to fight just to be accepted, for people to see you for you and not your last name. The dreamer with no safety net and fighting every day to make it through even when there’s not always a hand to hold. The one thing missing from this song is any mawkishness or false sentimentality. There is power and an edge and an aching hope that will resonate. Her voice is soulful, robust, and yet sinuous and full of fire and will drag you into this world of hers. You can almost feel the loneliness, but at the same time, there is a powerful sense of pride at being on your own two feet.
“Last Name” is a heavyweight country song because it carries the gravity of truth. Cali does not want anyone to believe that she is here on some nepotism thing. That is so the opposite of who she is and how she intends to show the world she has earned her stripes. “Last Name” will be added to the ever-growing playlist of supercalifragilisticexpialidocious tracks such as Urban Cowboy, Country Couture, and others in her catalogue. However, I do believe this is the start of a new journey. This is Cali declaring for the world who she is and on her terms, and that, my friends, is exactly why this one is special.
